The frustration and underlying dissatisfaction many feel as a result of either disengaging or never deeply engaging their own creative expression is one of the greatest afflictions affecting so many in modern society.
There is nothing out there that compares to living a life of inner and outer creative engagement for awakening soul satisfaction and for creating societal and cultural transformation.
It’s not always easy, but what else is?
One of the reasons we are seeing such an epidemic of depression and apathy throughout Western culture is because many have forsaken or failed to cultivate their own innate creativity.
Even greater still are the countless people that feel they have had their creativity shamed, shunned, disregarded and/or forbidden to them both as adults and most especially as children. How many people do you know that look to be addicted to taking in passive “entertainment” yet deep down really crave to be creating?
Wasted days are spent scrolling and trolling social media looking for something to stimulate one's deeper sensibilities and every night another episode plays out on the big screen TV, yet all the while the dissatisfaction continues to rumble.
If you ever plan to deeply engage your own creativity you might need to consider regularly logging off social media and permanently divorcing your tv. It's okay, it was never true love anyway.
No amount of numbing, avoiding, anesthetizing or self-medicating will ever completely cover up the sound of your creative muse whispering, pleading, screaming - to be given voice!
The muse wants to be let out of cave of resistance and self judgement to live out her days in the freedom realms of authentic expression.
Every great wisdom tradition tells us if we spend too much time looking outside of ourselves for true satisfaction we are ultimately looking in the wrong direction.
There is a missing piece though to this great and timeless wisdom…
There is a fresh ingredient to add to the cauldron of living in satisfaction. This most important ingredient is particular to this time and to these places. The ingredient is creative engagement.
It really doesn’t matter what you choose to do. It could be writing, drawing, daydreaming, cooking, lovemaking, dancing, singing, fire tending, seed saving, gardening, music, yoga or any other creative endeavor. The artistic medium is not the point. The point is to quiet the inner critic and insidious saboteur and to finally surrender time, energy and attention to your own creative instincts and process. It is a sure route to soul satisfaction which has a distinctly different flavor to that of spiritual liberation.
The tantrik yoga tradition is one of the first to demonstrate and remind us that the two are not mutually exclusive - creativity and spiritual practice are two of the most important alchemical ingredients for creating a satisfying life of full spectrum embodiment, spiritual recognition - and - holistic life mastery. Simultaneously! Yes, it’s a high order. It’s all always easier to say, then to do, but what else are we doing with our lives if not engaging them fully and creatively?
One of the things I love about practicing, teaching and sharing yoga is that it calls us out to engage both our bodies and our lives - not only spiritually - but creatively and mythically!
Not much else feels as good as embodied artistry.
Yoga, and in fact every true form of creativity, looks and feels different on everyone. That’s the way it’s meant to be!
After all both yoga and art are you - doing - you. Does that not sound satisfying and fun?
Plus as an artist you get to tango, wrestle, make love into form ~ with the limitless One.
It all adds up to why even the most awkward artists among us are hella, damn sexy. Have you noticed?
What I’ve noticed is that yoga has the seemingly magical ability to help people awaken their own creative sovereignty, it’s not the only way but it is a favorite among many.
Sure, it’s easy to make fun of all the mind-bending concoctions on display in the modern western Insta-yoga phenomena. None of that will erase the true power and beauty of this epically proportioned worldwide cross-cultural ancient/modern movement. After all, if you strip yoga down to it’s barest essences it’s a lot about radical individuality and all-encompassing unity. There is no greater combination and that ain’t nothing. Yoga is truly a Universal principle and worldview. We can and must thank India for giving it a name, but it truly does belong to everyone.
When practiced with devotion to the higher powers that be, yoga can actually help tap you into infinite and limitless creative energy. We even have a name for it, well actually she has a name - She being the one that bestows creative inspiration and energy - we call her Saraswati Shakti. Saraswati is the Goddess of creative flow and energy. For the record s/he has at least a million different names so don’t let's get stuck on just that one.
Life-affirming creativity is no small thing - it is that which will inspire the co-creative manifestation and emergence of the next Golden Age.
Our task is to individually and collectively become true conduits for the great creative energy that fuels this whole glorious divine play.
By the way, we are about to embark on the next round of the Surya Soma Yoga Life Enrichment and Teacher Training here in Southern Oregon.
If you haven’t already guessed - this training is really a creative catalyst under the guise of a yoga training.
This Yoga Life Enrichment Training is designed to help awaken and support you in reengaging the creative life force within you so as to enrich your own life and quite possibly your livelihood too.
Regardless of the outcome, you will most decidedly graduate the training with a deep and thorough foundation in the yogic arts and a quite possibly a lasting reconnection to the muse ~ who is also seeking you.
p.s. Before I leave you I have one last thought - if by chance artistic resistance comes on hard squawking at you that you’re wasting or running out of time pursuing your creative muse. Just learn to ignore that voice. And please. don’t. panic! There will always and forever be enough time to live and love your creative genius.
You have all the way up to the very last breath to creatively make love to the moment.
So dance and laugh and love and throw paint around, if even just inside of your own mind. You can live in full devotion to the muse without doing anything on the external plane. Every once in a while sit and relish in her creative power. You can visit the muse anytime, all the way up until the very last breath when the great animating force of the Creator/Creatrix comes for you and reabsorbs you back into the great mystery.
Until then…get co-creating!
