The archetypes of the Divine Feminine come in all different sizes, ages, hybrids, and colors ~ maiden, mother, queen, crone ~ black, white, red, yellow, brown ~ bird-woman, bee-woman, lion-woman, fish-woman, snake-woman ~ Kali, Lakshmi, Hera, Tara, Black Madonna, Venus of Willendorf…the list goes on. The one quality that most defines the “feminine” in the ancient Goddess revering cultures, the tantric yogic tradition and others is that the feminine is inherently multifarious and brings with her an absolutely limitless diversity of expression. No other statement about the feminine expresses her power more richly then this - “She is the one who desires to become many and through her ultimate creative power - does so”.
The multiplicity of diversity within the one grand unity is such an important concept to reflect upon in these times. What I’ve observed in myself and others over the years of contemplating and teaching about this concept is that when a person can begin to more fully grasp the brilliant complexity and variety of life forms across all species, dimensions and physical expressions, a natural outcome is more ease within ones own unique embodiment. Greater personal ease at the most authentic level leads to wider and deeper acceptance of all the other absolutely unique people and life expressions sharing space on this stunningly complex blue/green planet of ours.
The real clincher and coups de grâce is that every bit of the infinite variety of life throughout the universe is quite logically understood to be woven together into one unifying whole. There are as many names as there are beliefs systems for the "One". In yoga, we call the energy of the One - Shakti or feminine energy (which is neither separate from or superior/inferior to the presence described as masculine). From the One becomes the many and the many each return to the One in an endlessly recycling continuum.
One of the most common terms (one that's fallen out of favor in some circles because of its highly politicized nature) for this generating - organizing - destroying, infinitely creative life force energy, is simply - God/dess.
Some days when I look around the world and still feel truly stunned by the disharmony, differences and apparent chaos I try to remember to come home again to the recognition that there is a cosmic web of connections which I am intimately and dare I say, lovingly, embedded in. I am no longer a passive individual bystander in life, I am a conscious co-creative participant and can act in the world from my own true center which I experience as emerging from and inherently connected to ~ the very center of it all.
If we look deep and long and far enough - there seems to be a divine order at play and an ever-expanding cosmological story continuously unfolding. We are each an individual facet of the holographic tapestry and each of us has an impact on the whole. Through our personal choices and worldview, we help decide how the collective story unfolds.
